As part of National Travel and Tourism Week last week, Corn Palace staff revealed the mural theme, "UNDER THE BIG TOP 2022" during the First Friday event in the Corn Palace Plaza. The World's Only Corn Palace has hosted a Shrine Circus since 1959. The Corn Palace Events and Entertainment Board reviewed many theme ideas during the review process with the Circus theme rising to the top.
Dakota Wesleyan University students enrolled in the Digital Media and Design major under the Direction of Associate Professor Kyle Herges developed the mural designs. Drafts were reviewed by the Corn Palace Board with final designs being revealed on Friday night.
The El Riad Shrine and the local Corn Palace Shrine Club have directed the Circus all of these years, it was appropriate for members to be present when the announcement was made. With nearly 30 Shriners in attendance a special recognition was given to Shriner Troy Magnuson. Troy has been an employee of either the Corn Palace or Chamber of Commerce Gift Shop for nearly 40 years. As a member of the Corn Palace Shrine Club, Troy becomes "Pop Corn" the Clown. The likeness of "Pop Corn" will be one of the 2022 murals that adorn the Corn Palace.
Other murals will include elephants, trapeze artists, a big top circus tent, a Shriner fez, horses, and of course, clowns. These 2022 murals are on display in the Corn Palace lobby and all are invited to stop in and take a look. Decorating for the 2022 murals will begin in early summer with plans to be done prior to Thanksgiving each year. This 3rd generation Corn Palace celebrates 100 years in 2021.
